Yleistä

The History of Middle-earth -sarjan kolmannessa osassa Christopher Tolkien julkaisee kaksi pitkää, mutta keskeneräistä runoelmaa, jotka hänen isänsä kirjoitti hylättyään Kadonneitten tarujen kirjan. Ensimmäinen, The Lay of the Children of Húrin, kertoo Húrinin lasten tarinan käyttäen muinaisenglantilaista alkusointuista runomittaa. Tolkien kirjoitti runon ollessaan Leedsin yliopiston palveluksessa 1920–1925, tosin se on mahdollisesti aloitettu jo hieman aikaisemmin. Yli 2000 säkeen mittainen runo katkeaa kesken Túrinin oleskelun Nargothrondissa. Lähettäessään Lay of the Children of Húrin luettavaksi R.W. Reynoldsille vuonna 1926 Tolkien kirjoitti tiivistelmän "Sketch of the Mythology" selittääkseen tarinan taustaa, ja kuten sarjan seuraavassa osassa kerrotaan, tästä tiivistelmästä alkoi hahmottua koko mytologialle uusi kirjallinen muoto.

Jälkimmäinen teos, The Lay of Leithian (Leithianin Laulu), on Berenin ja Lúthienin tarinasta kertova loppusointuinen runo, jota siteerataan julkaistun Silmarillionin luvussa Beren ja Lúthien. Tolkien aloitti runon kirjoittamisen vuonna 1925, luultavasti pian jätettyään Lay of the Children of Húrinin kesken. Hän lopetti tekstin työstämisen vuonna 1931, päästyään yli neljän tuhannen rivin jälkeen kohtaan, jossa Beren ja Lúthien yrittävät paeta Angbandista ja Carcharoth nielaisee Berenin käden silmarileineen.

Tolkien aloitti Leithianin laulun muokkaamisen uudelleen vuonna 1949 tai 1950, mutta ei jatkanut työtä kovin pitkälle. Uuden version säkeet päättävät niteen, johon on liitetty myös C.S. Lewisin kirjoittama kommentaari laulun ensimmäisestä versiosta sekä muutamia lyhyitä keskeneräisiä runoja.
